Richmond Finds Its Olympic Groove

The 2010 Winter Games were supposed to be all about Vancouver and Whistler. But this small city, a collection of islands in the Fraser River delta, has done a medal-worthy job of becoming a big part of the Olympic conversation.
In many ways, Richmond is a textbook example of how you take advantage of the Olympics when they are coming to your area. And by the time the Games are over, tens of thousands of people – many of whom had never heard of the place before – will have come to visit, spend money and even explore business prospects.
“The Olympics gave us a chance to capitalize on many things,” Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie was saying the other day. “To get international exposure was an unparalleled chance which we seized. This was our one big chance to tell the world about what we had to offer.”
As someone who once lived in Richmond, I can say that it wasn’t that long ago that the city wouldn’t have had much to show off. It was known, primarily, for being the home of the Vancouver International Airport. Richmond isn’t an especially pretty place. The terrain is flat and dull. There is no downtown to speak of. The main artery is bordered by malls and retail outlets.
But down by the water it is beautiful. The old fishing community of Steveston is wonderful. You can still find farm land, although less of it every year. There is a long list of restaurants that are world class, especially if you enjoy Asian cuisine. Some of the new architecture is inspiring.
Anyway, when Vancouver won the bid to play host to the Olympics, Richmond city council decided right away it wanted in – somehow.
Originally, the city was supposed to be the site of the International Broadcast Centre. But NBC didn’t want to be headquartered here. It insisted on being in downtown Vancouver in the new convention centre. NBC got what it wanted. Richmond turned that setback into opportunity.
It stuck up its hand to build a new long-track speed-skating track.
Many in the community were skeptical. Especially, when cost estimates continued to escalate. When it was completed, Richmond taxpayers were on the hook for $115-million of the final $178-million bill. (VANOC contributed $63-million). But today few in the city are complaining about the costs.
The city paid for it by selling roughly 20 acres of land it had around the site of the Oval. It sold at the top of the market and got $141-million. Some went to pay for the Oval and the rest was put in a legacy fund.
The Richmond Oval has become that iconic piece of architecture that is the centrepiece of every Olympics. Sitting on the banks of the Fraser River, the Oval was made, in part, with wood from trees in B.C.’s Interior that were killed by the pine beetle. The roof takes the shape of a heron’s wing, a tribute to the bird and the Salish First Nation that inhabited the river bank a couple of hundred years ago.
The design continues to rack up international architecture awards.
After the Games, the facility will become a multiuse recreational complex, that will include two international-sized ice rinks, eight basketball courts and an indoor track area. It will be the most high-end rec centre in the country.
In the runup to the Games, Richmond began organizing a winter sports festival as a sort of dry run for the real thing. It was the foundation of what has become, for these Games, O Zone, or the biggest Olympic party you will find.
It includes an outdoor skating oval. In the vicinity is Heineken House, the most popular bar-under-a-tent at these Games. People line up for hours every night to get in.
Mr. Brodie, the mayor, is hoping some of the Olympic visitors to his city will also be interested in learning more about the business opportunities that exist within its borders.
There are more cranberries produced in Richmond than anywhere else in the world. To draw attention to this fact, the city laid out 13 million of them on the grounds of a city park to replicate the Olympic rings. You can see it when you fly into the airport.
“We also built a six-storey-high Inukshuk out of shipping containers to emphasize we’re a shipping hub because of our location near the airport but also to a major port, a river and all the rest,” said Mr. Brodie.
“The opportunities are endless.”

BMWBLOG Interviews Franz Jung, President and C.E.O. of BMW Canada
In an interview at the Toronto International Auto Show this week, BMW Canada’s CEO Franz Jung shared some of his thoughts and insights with BMWBlog reporter Shawn Molnar. In that interview, it is exciting to see his vision for the future; with a priority of maintaining BMW’s leadership of the premium vehicle segment and the commitment to the advancing of automotive technologies. We have posted a few excerpts from that interview here.
(Excerpts from BMWBlog post. To view the full article with photos click here)
BMWBLOG: What are BMW Canada’s goals for the future?
Franz Jung: We are now growing here for 19 years in a row, and for 7 consecutive years we are leading the premium segment. So the number one goal must be to maintain that function and that position. The second goal is to bring new technologies into this market as fast as possible, as early as they’re available. Like diesel engines – high performance diesel engines with low fuel consumption. Electric cars when they are coming, etc, etc.
BMWBLOG: Can our Canadian readers expect to see more BMW Diesel products in the future?
Franz Jung: Diesel has a trend, a strong trend. Our task is to explain to Canadians that a diesel is not a diesel. There are so many different ways of doing diesel engines, and we believe that we do have the best answer to that. Especially when it comes for example to the 335’s diesel, the engine has won a lot of awards all around the world. It’s seen as the best diesel engine in that segment. Our goal is to present diesels that are stronger and more precise that will be successful in Canada.
BMWBLOG: How would you propose to convince Canadians of the enjoyable drive a diesel can offer?
Franz Jung: Well, go to the dealer, ask for a test drive – and drive.
BMWBLOG: In a country where cities are spread far apart, drivers travel greater distances. Which Efficient Dynamics technology (among Hybrid, Electric, Diesel or Hydrogen drive) would best suit our Canadian landscape now and in the future?
Franz Jung: This is a little bit of a difficult question. We believe that a combination of a hybrid electric and a diesel engine would be the best answer to that. You have low fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions in cities and you can use them over a longer distance than other alternatives. So a combination, a package – I would recommend a package.
BMWBLOG: Very much like the Vision package?
Franz Jung: Yes, exactly like that.
BMWBLOG: Tell us more about BMW Canada’s new headquarters in Richmond Hill.
Franz Jung: Well, for me it’s good because it’s closer to my house [laughs]. The new offices, they fit perfectly well to our needs. We have new offices in a “green building” filling all the standards you have for green technology in terms of construction. We have three floors and we are together with our friends from financial services. We move in next month and all will be good.

News: BMW Concept ActiveE- via Auto West BMW in Vancouver
BMW Concept ActiveE
• Concept study of a purely electrically powered model based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé. The BMW Concept ActiveE represents a consistent continuation of the research and development activities of the BMW Group relating to electromobility as part of project i. A concept which realizes CO2-free mobility in BMW style is presented.
• The BMW Concept ActiveE is the BMW Group’s second vehicle after the MINI E to be developed as part of project i. After the successful launch of the pilot project MINI E, the BMW Group announces the development of another field test of electric vehicles for private and selected fleet users. The aim is to test the use of electric drive for everyday purposes in a vehicle which offers the driving pleasure which is characteristic of BMW automobiles.
• The specific features of the BMW Concept ActiveE include rear-wheel drive as is characteristic of BMW, a powerful drive system for dynamic acceleration maneuvers and a high level of efficiency to enable the vehicle to be used for purposes which go beyond urban mobility.
• The vehicle concept also comprises an extended range of functions with a high level of practical relevance. The intelligent arrangement of the drive components makes it possible to provide four full-size seats and a luggage compartment volume of some 200 liters (7 cubic feet).
• On the way to achieving CO2-free mobility, the BMW Group continues to develop electric drive as an additional mainstay of BMW EfficientDynamics. Electric drive provides an additional option for a lasting form of individual mobility alongside the ongoing optimization of all models with a pure combustion engine, the market launch of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in serial production vehicles and the BMW Hydrogen 7 as evidence of the suitability of hydrogen drive for everyday use.
Technology:
• The BMW Concept ActiveE is powered by a new synchronous electric motor specially developed for this vehicle. Its maximum output is 125 kW/170 bhp, the maximum torque of 250 Nm / 184 lb-ft is available from standing as is typical for electric motors and remains available over an unusually broad load range.
• For the first time, electrical energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack developed jointly by BMW and the co-operation partner SB LiMotive especially for the BMW Concept ActiveE. A new stable temperature regulation function optimizes the battery pack’s performance.
• Other characteristics of the drive technology used in the BMW Concept ActiveE are the weight-reduced construction and the package-optimized arrangement of all components. The electric motor is completely integrated in the rear axle, the power electronics is positioned above the motor. Space is used for energy storage which in vehicles powered by a combustion engine would be taken up by the conventional drivetrain and fuel tank. With a weight of some 1,800 kilograms / 3900 lbs (unladen weight according to DIN), a low center of gravity and an axle load distribution which is typical of a BMW, the vehicle has everything it requires to provide the dynamic driving properties and agile handling in the style of the BMW 1 Series.
• Predicted driving performance figures: acceleration from zero to 60 km/h (37mph) in less than 4.5 seconds and from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in less than 9 seconds, maximum speed: approx. 145 km/h (90 mph, electronically limited). As with the MINI E, the real-world range is expected to be about 160 km / 100 miles on a single charge, depending on conditions (FTP72 cycle range is calculated to be 240 km / 150 miles in simulation).
• Flexible charging technology enables the lithium-ion battery pack to be recharged by a conventional power outlet at public charging stations or at a special wall box. On the European grid, the battery pack can be fully charged at a high-current power outlet (50 ampere) in as little as 3 hours. In North America, using a high-current (32 ampere continuous) residential wall box, the charge time is about 4.5 hours.
• The drive components used in the BMW Concept ActiveE have been developed as part of project i. The objectives on which this is based are derived from the requirements for the serial production development of a Megacity Vehicle.
• In the BMW Concept ActiveE, new BMW ConnectedDrive services are presented which have been designed exclusively for use in an electric vehicle. This includes specific remote functions which enable the use of a mobile phone to check the charge status of the battery, search for public charging stations and activate the vehicle’s auxiliary heating and air conditioning functions.
Design:
• The BMW Concept ActiveE is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe. It embodies a new interpretation of the agility which is characteristic of the 1 Series. For the first time, CO2-free mobility and the driving pleasure characteristic of BMW are combined for up to four vehicle occupants in an electric vehicle concept.
• There is a clearly recognizable differentiation from the serial production model of the BMW 1 Series Coupe with the body finish in Liquid White metallic, as well as graphic elements derived from printed circuits in Electric Blue on the hood, doors, roof and trunk lid, as well as the lettering “ActiveE”, “eDrive” and “EfficientDynamics” on the doors and side panels. Specific light-alloy wheel wheels, the lack of an exhaust system and blue illuminated elements such as the roof fin and charging connection highlight the special character of this electrically powered concept vehicle.
• The interior of the BMW Concept ActiveE includes specific leather seats with embossed graphic elements and blue accentuated seams as well as interior strips in Liquid White with rear-lit three-dimensional graphics. The instrument panel and the central display have been enhanced to include display items specific to electric drive. The use of innovative remote functions as part of BMW ConnectedDrive is shown with the example of a smartphone connection which is fully linked into the vehicle infotainment system.
